What does it take to face a dragon? When a young wizard named Zollin begins to awaken the magical world, he also sets events in motion that will change the Five Kingdoms forever. In the north a dragon ravages villages and towns. The King's armies are powerless to stop the beast. Refugees begin fleeing to the larger cities in hope of finding safety. In the south, the Council of Kings plot an invasion. Under the influence of the Torr, a group of wizards who have held the Five Kingdoms in their power for three centuries, they turn their attention to bringing Zollin into their fold. They will stop at nothing to control his power, even if it means the assassination of the Crown Prince. As Zollin and his friends strive to bring peace to the Kingdom of Yelsia, they are faced with harrowing dangers and heart wrenching decisions that threaten to tear them apart.

Books 1-7 of The Five Kingdom Series:
Wizard Rising, Magic Awakening, Hidden Fire, Crying Havoc, Fierce Loyalty, Evil Tide, Wizard Falling

This is a series you have to read!!! It is soooo good!! The characters are built so well that you love them and hate others; they make you feel so much that you'll be crying or so darn mad from the injustice of it all. The special attachment to the dragons reaches through the books words and ensnares you, just as the battle scenes rile you up and your brain is shouting for them to "get out of there and get to safety". This series is great from chapter to chapter, and book to book. I felt like I was on the journey with these characters and that's exactly what I'm looking for when I read. For those just beginning the series know three things: 1) once you start, you won't be able to stop 2) you can purchase the books in 3 book bundles, 3) this series is available on kindle prime.
I read this series in two stages, but only because the series wasn't finished when I started. I read from the first through Crying Havoc, then a few days ago, I started again with Fierce Loyalty and just finished the final book. I literally could not put these books down! I definitely didn't stop between books to write a review. No way! That's how good they are! This review encompasses them all.
Zollin, a young kid with a carpenter father in a small town, gains magical powers and is sought after by the leader of The Torr (the Five Kingdoms magical wizards who are legally bound to stay in the magical tower with other wizards in The Grand City, under the rule of the lead wizard, Offendorl). The whole series is about O's jealousy and obsession to obtain Zollin's (Z) magical powers for his own. Along the way he has his father Quinn, the carpenter and retired royal guard soldier, Mansel, his fathers apprentice whom Z is jealous but ultimately becomes best friends, and then, there's Brianna (B), the girl from Z's hometown that he cares so much about. B and Z begin as friends but a lasting relationship of love occurs while on their dangerous travels across the Five Kingdoms. Although there's danger everywhere they find friendship and help from the people of the kingdom. The group comes to care for the these people, and subsequently wants to protect them from the evilness that's threatening their life's and their freedom, even though it may cost them their lives.
Brianna finds out she has her own special talents. Because of her, the group and the kingdom will have their own beautiful and magical dragons fighting on their side rather than burning their homes. But will it be enough to save the kingdom? Figuring out exactly who's their enemy and who's their freind is a huge part of the puzzle: from king to soldier, to servant, to wizard, and even to dragon. It's hard not knowing who you can trust but they can always count on each other. They started together and their hope is to end this madness together or if not, then at least, to end together.
A must read!!! There are a few spelling or missed words, things like that, but overall it's a well written series.
There is a spin-off from this series. It's a trilogy and we get to visit again with some of the characters from this series. Thank goodness because I wasn't ready to say goodbye and I did wonder why we didn't see anything more of one of the characters that was introduced and I felt sure our heroes would see again. Now I know why. :)

Hidden Fire The Five Kingdoms Book 3 edition by Toby Neighbors Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I am in the same boat with many of the other reviewers -- I LOVED the first two, but this third book is... well, confounding. Although there are lots of new plot threads and twists, very little in the way of resolution, world-building, or character development actually happens in this book. As another reviewer points out, this book seems more like a bridge between books 2 and 4 than a book in its own right. I hope book 4 weaves the threads together.
I really enjoyed the first two books in this series. The characters were fun and interesting, the personal relationships were believable, and their adventures were entertaining. Zollin's discovery of his magic, Brianna's discovery of herself, Quinn's discovery of his son and Mansel's discovery that he should really be a warrior were all fun to go through with them. Everyone and everything fit together and was cohesive. The evil wizards were evil; the good guys were good guys. I liked it.

Imagine my dismay when I realized part way through book three that this was not a trilogy. It could have been. It would have worked well as a trilogy. There was plenty of space in the first three books to create the story and still do it in three. This book was, as others put it, a bridge to book four.

The additional characters lacked depth and development. The king, the prince, the ship captain, etc., could have been fleshed out even as background characters they were weak.

I also had a lot of trouble with the typos in this book. Pretty sure the dragon was in his lair not his liar and nobody had a boot heal. And, yes, we are aware that Mansil drinks and that Zollin's mother died in childbirth. We are well aware that Quinn was in the Royal Guard. It isn't necessary to continually go back to the same things over and over.

And the ending was horrible. It's bad enough that TV shows leave you hanging at the end of the season, but to have a book do that, be a cliff hanger, literally, is disappointing and doesn't make me want me to buy the next book. For all I know at this point there may be 30 in the series and I will never have any closure for these characters!

I read every book in the Sword of Truth series and all of the Game of Thrones (don't get me going on the last book in that series!) and felt the length of the books and the number of books in the series were justified. This is not a Jordon, Martin or Goodkind series, not really in that "epic" adventure category. I still gave it three stars but that is mainly based on the first two books.
I very much enjoyed the first and second books in this series. I hate to say it, but I found this third installment disappointing and annoying. The problem? The characters act like a bunch of children, not adults. It felt like the author was reaching to create uninteresting and childish conflict to fill the pages. It simply was not fun to read. Now, if I were 11 or 12, I might feel very differently about it... but I'm not. Toby Neighbors can do, and has done, much better than this.
I enjoyed the first seven books of the Five Kingdoms series. My review is in the first of the books. But elements were introduced as the series progressed that made me decide not to continue after seven.

I admire Neighbors' writing skills and his imagination. For readers who don't share my objections, you may find him to be one if the best authors you read. Characters like Zollin are what place a book in my favorites list. But, Zollin's morality was not typical of the characters in the story, even the 'good' ones.
